New Time-Lapse Video of Framework Removal

This new time-lapse video shows the removal of the web-like dome framework, along with several of the original speakers.  1,000+ aluminum screen tiles were mounted to this framework, comprising the familiar geodesic pattern. 

GREEN SPOT! All of the aluminum you see in this video was recycled, furthering our commitment to make this a completely “green” project.

  • What’s Going On?

    On March 10, 1973, the Space Theater at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center opened to the public, featuring America's first IMAX Theater and the first "tilted dome" planetarium in the world.

    On September 4, 2008, the Space Theater "went dark" for an extreme makeover! New seamless dome screen, new sound system, new seats and much more! Renovations are now complete and the theater reopened on December 13, 2008!

    The theater renovation is part of a $20 million capital campaign, "Creating Possibilities, Inspiring Tomorrow."

    On November 30th, 2012 the Heikoff Dome Theater was closed for a single day while 4 of the worlds brightest, biggest video projectors were lowered into place. The following 2 months was filled with installing and fine tuning the equipment to provide the amazing dome filling immersive visual experience called Fulldome.

    2 years on, we are well into producing our own Fulldome material, and have begun showing others how to create in this amazing and immersive medium as well. We have presented several shows created specifically for this format- Black Holes: the Other Side of Infinity, Tales of the Maya Skies, Rock the Dome, Let It Snow, and Cosmic Collisions. In house creations have added astronomy in the form of a seasonal Sky Show and a look at the Comets visiting in 2013,

    In 2021 the 4 Sony SRX T-420 video projectors were removed and the IMAX Laser projector was installed. The first film chosen was the new release "Dune"
