IMAX Projector or compact car?

Ever wonder how an IMAX film is projected onto a curved dome screen? Well, first you need a very big projector… 1,500 pounds, to be precise. It makes sense that the world’s largest film format (one frame of IMAX film is almost 10 times larger than a single frame of 35mm film) needs a huge projector, but it’s still impressive to watch it climb the 14-foot track before each and every show.

Once the film begins, the projector relies on a 15,000-watt, water-cooled Zenon lamp to project the images across the curved dome screen.  It’s just one of many things that make the IMAX film experience so extraordinary.
